About 80% of my real life friends are Thais, they are, in my experience, warm, friendly, hospitable people. So frankly, the whole Thailand is scary thing doesn’t work for me.

In reply to bpbetsy. I don't think she consciously chose "dong" to achieve any particular effect, and agree that she just intended a joke. Regardless of what Lindy West was trying to do, though, when paired with "fucking Thailand" and "5,000 miles away" I believe the word choice does add, subtly, to the reader's sense of being with some creepy (foreign) person in an unsafe (foreign) place—particularly Asia, which Americans associate with sex trafficking horror stories more so than any other continent.

Agreed. She’s assuming (along with many of the commenters) that the women who sign up for the site are clueless and naive. When I bet that most of them already identify as sex workers (or sugar babies, hustlers, something synonymous) and have done other types of sex work.

I do wonder about the legality of this, and if the women would be targeted in sting ops. Does anyone know if these sugar daddy websites are being used to arrest sex workers?

One more thing – I wouldn’t read too much into “ExecutiveDong” – I think that dong is one of the silliest, most absurd words for penis, which is probably why she used it, for a laugh. But you are right about Thailand being a problematic example.
