Mary’s Club Portland – The quint essential tiny dive bar / strip club only a few blocks from Powell’s Books in downtown. Great jukebox, the dancers are fun and the mother / daughter bartenders are sweet. I just love the place. Add into that some amazingly homo-erotic art on the walls of sweaty Tom-of-Finland-esk men unloading banana’s from cargo ships and you’ve got something special. My home away from home when I’m in Portland.

Safari, from a customer’s view is definitely better than from a dancers view. I wouldn’t say it is run down considering the poles are in fine shape, the stages aren’t falling apart and neither are any of the places customers plop their butts down but I would NOT say it was a top 50. I worked there, I have had many a fun times at that place but the money is flighty and the customers are mostly regulars or younger dudes looking for a new piece of arm candy (at little to no cost).
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great bar to hang out at and the bartenders are awesome but as far as top 50 strip clubs of North America? No. Did Sassy’s even make it on this list? What were the criteria for this ranking?
Seriously misguided.

For the record Safari, as of last weekend, is still run down. The piranhas are big enough now to eat a goldfish, though I have never seen them being fed during business hours. For what its worth the O’Farrell Theater was the first club I went to, in 1980, its still hard to beat, for variety of experience or dancers.

This is true. (I am surprised the Cadillac Lounge placed higher, though, based on, uh, what I’ve heard. I mean for me it was more fun! But also that’s where a stripper called me a fag. Which wasn’t wrong, technically? God, I wish I hadn’t spent so long clicking through that thing. You don’t even know what it took to not click on the related article of the 50 Best College Coffee Shops…)

I’m so glad somebody responded to this list! I too was full of commentary upon reading it. My first of many objections was having Safaris on the list with Ricks NY and some of the other absurdly lush clubs? I think that’s just setting people up for disappointment. Not that Safari’s is bad, but I think many out-of-towners would be underwhelmed if expecting “Top 50” material.

re #33: The Foxy Lady in Providence is decent, and Legs & Eggs is quite the deal ($7!), but I don’t fully get the big whoop about the place. I mean it’s pretty good? Although mostly what I hear is that Red Sox and Patriots players go there, more than anything about the ladies or whatever.
