Another thing that I found particularly telling was that when Wade walks through the streets trying to build up his courage to talk to Vanessa you can hear and see people judging how he looks. When he walks through the strip club, in pretty much the same outfit, you see some of the women working there not only look at him but make eye contact with him. Not. One. Flinches.

The only people in the movie who look him in the face and not make a visible or verbal reaction to his appearance were sex workers.
