I love Archer, and I love Trinette. I did register the hooker jokes as they go past. But the thing about Archer that redeems it is: the sex workers are not presented as, or treated as, any better or any worse than any of the other characters. Everyone on Archer is so deliciously awful, riddled with weird quirks, and both the subject of and the perpetrator of various types of violence, and Trinette is no different.

The trans jokes are not good. I’m REALLY hoping they get a trans character next season, and that they are just as awesome/terrible as the rest of the cast.

My favorite sex work characters on TV now are the Old West whores on the show QuickDraw. Honey Shaw, Pearl Star, and Wanda!

I can’t shake the feeling that Trinette having all the qualities listed above was actually a punchline. She subverted expectations because obviously sex workers aren’t like that, har har har. I don’t know. The show obviously isn’t for me; it didn’t make me laugh and I turned it off after the second episode.

Trinette is the bee’s knees. For another example of sex workers being portrayed in a nice light, check out Marshmallow on Bob’s Burgers. 🙂 (Interestingly, another cartoon example. Can we only get a fair shake when someone’s drawing us and not looking at an actual woman, I wonder?)

I’m also a fan of the show, and when I saw the episode where Trinette was thrown in the trunk I thought, oh god, this old story again. But I was pleasantly surprised. Definitely a very rare representation of a sex worker, especially in a comedy series.
