I did a short stint at a club that played Closing Time.

Until recently, my regular club played New York, New York. I liked how triumphant and joyous it felt, especially at the end of a good Saturday night. The lights would be coming on so we’d scurry to the elevator like rats, flashing our bits and doing drunken high-kicks in front of the last customers. Haha. Now it’s an Elvis ballad – forgotten what. Not so much fun but at least it’s a very clear-cut wind-down song so straggling custies will get the message.

John T at Sugars (Austin) always played Whiter Shade of Pale as the last song. I don’t know why he chose it, but I always thought it a nice way to wind down at the end of the night.

Holly: the customers rarely have any idea who it is singing that song, which is part of what makes it so creepy. It’s a nice inside joke that is somehow even more satisfying in its unrecognized roots.
