HAH! I watched this a few weeks ago with my man creature and we agree with you that it was totally confusing crap. Why can the men not penetrate her, for example? It’s implied that they’re paying a lot of money for this. I’d definitely want more than shoving her around and licking her face. Who the hell was the alcoholic? Did he commit suicide? I think he did. I think that the thin old guy at the end did too. His speech about the book was clearly significant but I totally don’t get it. I DID have a good chuckle at the look on the madam’s face when he was talking. It totally looks like the look I have inside when a client blathers on about something inane and stupid.

When the movie ended the man creature yelled at the screen and was actively mad for several days. I’ve never seen him that upset (he’s kinda a robot)! “I feel like I wasted too much of my life on that total waste of a movie” After I’ve read him several reviews he’s gotten a little smug, “You see. They don’t get it either. That movie sucked.”

I don’t think it was a very accurate representation of sex-work or sex-workers, and I don’t think it was trying to be super-accurate. I think it was trying to get us to empathize with a person in a strange situation so that we understand why the final scene causes her such distress.

Overall, I found it a bit disturbing, but effective. I feel it’s a mistake to try and project a small film like this onto such a big topic as sex-work in general.

I did enjoy the review, and look forward to the next.

I actually liked this movie, not looking at it as a film about sex work, but just as a movie about life and death; youth and old age. I thought Browning’s performance was profound in its subtlety.

I also was wondering where that old guy’s dick was.
