" I often feel like I’m breaking yet another implicit rule of ho-dom because of the fact that I truly do count him as a friend, without that prerequisite of distance that’s necessary in all my other client interactions."

Ugh, I can so identify with this, and it hurts my brain. One of my best regulars at the strip club somehow turned into an actual friend and any time this comes up (with my partner or even with my reg) I feel like I should be apologizing for being somehow "unprofessional." Lots of my other best regulars have been those "we could be actual friends if not for X" cases (X usually standing in for "all those poorly spelled "romantic" drunk texts to my google voice account") but ultimately they are still just customers. But while befriending your regulars can definitely be a boundary issue/cause complications, I feel like "never do it" doesn't realistically make sense. We spend a huge chunk of our time at work, and meet a lot of people there. My friends who work in regular bars and coffee shops and restaurants have befriended regular customers. It happens.

True, most of my friends do not swing by my workplace with a few hundred dollars as a "Christmas present" but if most of my friends had the disposable income to do that I wouldn't argue, either.

I love the photo you chose for this. It sums up every regular client I've ever had who's "fallen in love" with me.

Great discussion. Thank you.
