Re legislation in Denmark - let me clarify:
Brothel prostitution is not as such legal in Denmark. Sex work in itself is not criminalized, but neither is it legalized. However, there's a vaguely-defined "pimp paragraph" in the law criminalizing anyone (apart from the sex worker) who makes any kind of profit from the transaction - including brothel owners or any employees such as drivers, cleaners, phone secretaries etc. In theory, even the sex worker's personal family.

Thus, in effect, police have the authority to raid and/or shut down and prosecute anyone organizing or employed by a brothel, no matter how small the profit or fair the wages. And over the last years, there's an increase in exactly that happening, probably to appease political pressure (from very powerful left-wing politicians wanting to implement "the Swedish model" ...)
And of course, sex workers have no rights, even though they can be prosecuted if the do not pay taxes of their income (whatever amount the state believe it to be) .

There's a lot of info - albeit in Danish only - about the Danish situation, research, debate, plus theme pages with facts about how it's going in criminalized Sweden and Norway, at the web page for the sexual political network I co-represent; www.seksualpolitik.dk
and at the Danish sex worker's interest group; www.s-i-o.dk

Great post Dacia. I remember about 5 years ago when that man came from India and showed a video of a rally there. I was blown away by the numbers. Even with the larger population, it was impressive. Here is a video I just found on youtube. Is there a place on youtube or elsewhere where all these videos could be grouped together? Just as your words help put the big picture across, so would the pictures.

Right on Dacia. I had a similar experience of having my mind blown by the strength and solidarity of Empower in Thailand. It not only put the lie to the thousands of lies I'd been told about Thai sex workers, it also inspired me to work harder on building community amongst sex workers (rather than focusing exclusively on convincing non-sex workers to like or respect us).

Plus it is incredibly reassuring and exciting to see where our organizing could *go*: our own worker-run busineses? Rallies that turn out hundreds of workers? A place at the table in federal discussions about policy? Yes!

Really appreciate this post. The different scales of sexwork activism are important to ponder at the least if not to act on them. How we as sexworkers in our particular city, state, or country are connected to others around the globe matters and sharing tactics across geographies and politics is inspiring. Thanks for bringing it back to us even if it wasn't all happy-go-lucky-we're-gonna-win-the-big-fight feelings.
