Thank you for this interview. I am in rabid agreement with all of her points, and also the fact that she, like me, is a former sex worker who came out of addiction to get underway with building her most meaningful life and work in her 40s, gives me so much hope for the future!

Wow! Very exciting to see one of my heros interviewed. Tricks of the Trade you link above ( http://www.berkeleyneed.org/resources/tricksmanual.pdf ) that she created was groundbreaking and so important for so many people including activists and health service providers at the time. It provided a snapshot and map of what harm reduction could be for sex workers. It paved the way for all the harm reduction materials and campaigns. Huge, early, brave and brilliant contribution! Thanks for this!!

Calling this inspiring would almost be trivializing, as if the purpose of her life was to motivate other people to action. So let’s just say that, reading this, I felt better about sex worker activism than I ever have, and thank you so much for sharing this woman’s brilliant and powerful words.

Loved this interview. I especially appreciate Stern’s point about education needing to be individualized, as well as her insight on why the 12 step program can have a negative impact on those who don’t stick around long enough to regain agency over their addiction.
